GRS News India : Kunming, China | 5th June 2026. As part of its ongoing commitment to providing students with global opportunities and international pathways, a delegation from St. Joan’s School, Kolkata, visited Kunming Medical University (KMU), Yunnan Province, China, on 5 June 2026.
The delegation comprised Mrs. Debjani Ghosh, Principal; Ms. Lucia Gupta, Vice Principal; and Ms. Jacinta Sureka, Head of Global Engagement.
The visit was facilitated with the support and encouragement of His Excellency Mr. Xu Wei, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Kolkata. St. Joan’s School extends its sincere appreciation to the Consulate General for its continued efforts in strengthening educational exchanges and fostering meaningful people-to-people connections between India and China.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by the leadership of Kunming Medical University, one of China’s leading medical institutions. The programme included formal discussions with Mr. Guo Haiyun, Director of the Division of Overseas Cooperation and Exchange; Mr. Zhao Peng, Chief of the Project Management Section; Dean Liu Yajie and senior faculty members from the School of International Education.
During the meeting, Principal Mrs. Debjani Ghosh presented an overview of St. Joan’s School, highlighting the institution’s 35-year legacy of academic excellence, its commitment to innovation and internationalisation, and its pioneering Mandarin language programme.
The delegation also had the opportunity to interact with Indian students currently pursuing medical studies at Kunming Medical University, gaining valuable insights into student life, academic experiences, and career opportunities available through higher education in China.
Established in 1933, Kunming Medical University has built a strong reputation in medical education, scientific research, and healthcare training. The university offers modern teaching facilities, advanced laboratories, simulation centres, research infrastructure, and comprehensive support services for international students.
A significant highlight of the visit was the university’s extensive clinical training ecosystem. KMU is supported by four major affiliated hospitals and eleven additional teaching hospitals, providing students with exceptional opportunities for clinical exposure, practical training, research, and professional development.
While medicine remains a major attraction for international students, the delegation was particularly encouraged by opportunities in emerging healthcare disciplines including Rehabilitation Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Medical Imaging Technology, Public Health, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nursing, and Allied Health Sciences. These rapidly growing fields are expected to play an increasingly important role in the future of global healthcare.
The delegation was impressed by the university’s world-class teaching and learning infrastructure and the integration of advanced technologies into healthcare education. China’s significant investments in healthcare innovation, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, medical research, and hospital systems provide students with exposure to some of the most advanced healthcare environments in the world.
The discussions also highlighted several advantages for Indian students considering higher education in China, including affordable tuition fees, access to modern healthcare infrastructure, scholarship opportunities, international learning environments, and exposure to one of the world’s most dynamic healthcare ecosystems.
Following the discussions, the delegation toured teaching facilities and student activity areas before concluding the visit with lunch at the International Exchange Centre.
Commenting on the visit, Ms. Jacinta Sureka, Head of Global Engagement, said:
“As educators, our responsibility is to expose students to opportunities that extend beyond national boundaries. Our visit to Kunming Medical University has provided valuable insights into the future of medical and healthcare education. We are particularly encouraged by the university’s strengths in emerging healthcare disciplines, advanced clinical training, research opportunities, and international student support. We look forward to exploring future collaborations that may benefit our students and strengthen educational ties between India and China.”
The visit represents another important milestone in St. Joan’s School’s ongoing efforts to internationalise learning and create meaningful global pathways for students. It also reinforces the school’s commitment to preparing young people to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
