Staff Reporter : Kolkata, 6th November 2025: A middle-aged man was rushed at the emergency of Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, around 1am with his right hand thumb amputated, seven bones fractured, nerves cut and blood supply disrupted in his hand. Mr. Sujoy Sen (name changed) was bursting crackers during the idol immersion when he suffered the mishap. *Dr Akhilesh Kumar Agarwal, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Manipal Hospital Dhakuria* examined him and promptly decided to put him for surgery that lasted for 6 hours and was successfully carried out giving hope to the victim to cure his functional hand.
On examination, Mr Sen it was found that the right hand was mangled, with amputation of the right thumb at the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint. There was complete disruption of the palmar arch, resulting in neurovascular injury to the II–V fingers. Radiographic and intraoperative assessment revealed six fractures involving the metacarpal heads of the II–V fingers and the proximal phalanges of the IV and V fingers.
*Dr Akhilesh Kumar Agarwal, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Manipal Hospital Dhakuria,* said, “The injury was devastating since the impact of the blast has left his right thumb amputated, with fracture in all the bones, the thumb and fingers were torn apart when the incident occurred. He was timely bought to the hospital and we immediately decided to perform the surgery. K-wire fixation was done for stabilization of the fractures. The right thumb was successfully re-implanted, and blood supply of the fingers was restored by reconstruction of digital vessels.”
Mr Sen was monitored closely for vascular patency and wound healing and was discharged five days post the surgery and he will start his physiotherapy after three weeks. Till then his hand remains plastered. It is hopeful that he should be able to do well and gain back his functions sooner. Though it will take some time to recover and he will remain under follow-ups.
