India, 5 November 2026: The Indian family holiday is taking on new meaning, as travellers increasingly look beyond simply exploring destinations to spending quality time with loved ones across generations. Airbnb’s new survey on intergenerational travel¹ revealed that three in four (75%) Gen Z and Millennial respondents are more likely to travel with family members from different generations, reflecting a growing interest in holidays centred on togetherness, shared experiences and meaningful connections.

The shift is showing up in the demand for larger-group stays on Airbnb. According to Airbnb internal data², domestic searches for stays by groups of five or more guests, including at least one child or infant, grew over 55% year-on-year. From shared family getaways to holidays that bring loved ones together under one roof, the findings point to the importance of connection and quality time in shaping travel preferences.

The family holiday is evolving, and Gen Z is helping write the new rules

For Indian travellers, holidays across generations are increasingly valued as a way to create new memories and reconnect with loved ones. Airbnb’s Intergenerational Travel Insights 2026¹ finds that 55% value these trips for creating shared memories, 52% associate them with having fun together, and 51% with strengthening bonds with family and friends.

Gen Z is a big part of that shift. Seven in ten (70%) say they are more likely to travel across generations than a few years ago, and more than 60% travelled with both friends and parents in the past year, compared with 49% and 46% of Millennials¹. Companionship comes first for this generation: in Airbnb’s Never the Same report, 3 in 4 Gen Z travellers said who they travel with matters more than where they go.

That intent is showing up in how they book. Group bookings by Indian Gen Z travellers have also grown by almost 55% year-on-year domestically. When they plan, around 50% prefer a whole home, villa or apartment, a sign that younger travellers want a shared space for the whole family to come together.

The stay is becoming as intentional as the destination

While exploring a new destination remains an important part of travel, the research reveals that some of the most valued moments during multi-generational holidays are spent simply being together.

Nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents say they most enjoy relaxing and spending time together at their accommodation, ahead of sightseeing and exploring (56%). Sharing meals (57%), playing games (45%) and watching films or shows together (39%) also feature among preferred activities, reflecting how everyday moments can become an important part of the holiday experience.

This emphasis on togetherness extends to accommodation preferences. Among respondents who prefer a whole home, villa or apartment, 89% consider having a shared space where everyone can spend time together important. Living rooms or common spaces (58%), sufficient bedrooms (56%) and multiple bathrooms (55%) are among the most important features for these travellers.¹

For groups travelling across generations, whole-home stays on Airbnb offer an opportunity to spend time together while enjoying the flexibility of shared living spaces, kitchens and the freedom to experience a destination at their own pace.

Amanpreet Singh Bajaj, Airbnb’s Country Head for India and Southeast Asia, said, “Family holidays have always been an important part of how Indians travel. What we’re seeing now is a growing interest among younger generations in bringing different generations together, with travel becoming an opportunity to reconnect, create new memories and spend meaningful time with one another. At Airbnb, we’re seeing this reflected in growing demand for larger-group stays, where guests can enjoy the flexibility of a whole home, share meals, spend time together and create memorable experiences.”

From coastal escapes to nature retreats, destinations for every generation

Finding a destination that appeals to everyone is an important consideration. The study revealed that 59% prioritise choosing a destination that everyone will enjoy, while 55% look for accommodation that suits the needs of the entire group.

Nature-led holidays emerge as a popular choice, with 56% preferring mountains, countryside or nature destinations, followed by beach and coastal getaways (47%) and heritage or spiritual destinations (44%).

Domestic travel continues to account for a significant majority of these trips on Airbnb, representing over 80% of searches among India-origin groups of five or more, compared to above 15% for international destinations.² Airbnb search trends² also reflect interest in a diverse range of domestic destinations, with Bangalore, Goa, Hyderabad, The Nilgiris, Pondicherry featuring among the most-searched destinations for groups of five or more guests.

As Indian travellers increasingly seek opportunities to reconnect with their families, the findings point to how the best family holidays are defined as much by who is travelling as by where they go. Whether over a shared meal, a lazy afternoon under one roof or the first look at a new destination, it is the time spent together that makes the trip.

Airbnb shares five tips for planning a successful multi-generational trip

As more Indian families travel together, here are five tips to help every generation enjoy the stay:

1. Look out for Guest Favourites and Superhosts

Look for ‘Guest Favourite’ badges for trusted homes and ‘Superhost’ badges for hosts who provide excellent hospitality. Among India’s 10 most-searched destinations, more than one in four listings that can host five or more guests are run by Superhosts, and Guest Favourite listings of that size have an average rating of 4.923.

2. Confirm your group size, little ones included

Enter the accurate number of guests, including children and infants, so your host can prepare everything from cots to extra bedding. About one bathroom per bedroom is the most popular set-up: according to Airbnb’s internal data, groups of five or more travelling domestically book homes with an average of around 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, and groups of eight or more book around 4 of each².

3. Filter for your family’s must-haves

Use search filters for must-have amenities; pool and minimum number of bedrooms are the filters large groups use most, followed by kitchen². For families travelling across generations, filters can also cater to everyone in the group, from cots and high chairs for the youngest guests to accessibility features like step-free access for older relatives.

4. Questions? Just message the host before you book

Want to check if the kitchen has a pressure cooker big enough for the whole family, or need a nearby restaurant to celebrate a milestone birthday? Just message your host before you book. They’re your best local insider. You can also search reviews for keywords like “family” or “kids” to see what other parents say.

5. Know before you go, and know that help is on hand

Booking a home with a pool? Airbnb’s water safety feature shares practical tips, and in the rare event of an issue, you can reach your host or Airbnb’s 24-hour Urgent Safety Line via email, chat or call during an active stay.
